What does the Bible say about baptism, and why is it so important?

There has been a trend in modern Christianity which has begun to place little value on baptism, and treat it as an optional token, rather than a vital step in our faith, teaching that baptism is only symbolic, and that it has no other purpose. They claim that baptism is simply an outward expression of an inward act, and in many cases the “altar call” has come to replace the baptismal in the life of new believers. However, if baptism is only symbolic, then why did Yeshua command that all believers become baptized?

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…”
Matthew 28:19-20

Why would our Messiah place so much emphasis on baptism if it was only symbolic? He placed it on equal ground with making disciples and teaching them to obey all of His commandments. He also linked baptism to salvation, saying,

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
Mark 16:15-16

When did baptism originate, and what is its purpose? We know that John was baptizing people in the Jordan for repentance of sins, but was he the first to introduce baptism?

If we do a little research, we find a connection between baptism and the practice of ablution, the act of washing oneself in water as prescribed by God in the Torah.

There are three kinds of ablution recognized in Biblical and rabbinical law: (1) Washing of the hands, (2) washing of the hands and feet, and (3) immersion of the whole body in water. These ablutions are often referred to as “ritual washings”, and the two most common are that of hand washing and full body immersion.

The Bible provides a number of scenarios for when we should wash ourselves in water. It serves to decontaminate from sickness and disease, to purify from touching unclean things, to sanitize from emissions and menstruations, and to sanctify before entering the temple.

John Wesley popularized the phrase, “Cleanliness is indeed next to godliness”, and although that phrase is not found in the Scriptures, the concept can be inferred from the sheer number of times the Bible instructs us to wash.

Aside from ritual cleansing, immersion was also used in the conversion process for Gentile proselytes to become part of the Jewish people. This is actually where the baptism for conversion originated. Being “baptized into Christ Jesus” is the starting point for those who wish to enter the covenant. Listen to what the Jewish Encyclopedia says about baptism for conversion.

“The Baptism of the proselyte has for its purpose his cleansing from the impurity of idolatry, and the restoration to the purity of a new-born man… The bathing in the water is to constitute a rebirth, wherefore ‘the ger is like a child just born’ and he must bathe ‘in the name of God’ — ‘leshem shamayim’ — that is, assume the yoke of God’s kingdom imposed upon him by the one who leads him to Baptism, or else he is not admitted into Judaism. For this very reason the Israelites before the acceptance of the Law had, according to Philo on the Decalogue, as well as according to rabbinical tradition, to undergo the rite of baptismal purification…”

This is very similar to what Paul wrote about those who passed through the red sea after leaving Egypt.

“Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”
1 Corinthians 10:1-4

The phrase “baptized into Moses” is a reference to Moses being the one who led them in their baptism, and it was under Moses that they assumed “the yoke of God’s kingdom”. This would mean that if we are baptized in Yeshua, then we assume the yoke of the covenant through Him, because He is the one who leads us into the kingdom.

There are a number of types and shadows of baptism in the Scriptures such as Noah and the flood, Moses in the Nile, the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, and Jonah in the belly of the whale. Not only do these events represent baptism, but also point prophetically to the resurrection. Each of these accounts show how people were redeemed from death through water.

Peter made a direct correlation between baptism and the resurrection. He also used the flood as an example of baptism, explaining how Noah and his family were saved through water.

“…when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. There is also an antitype which now saves us – baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,”
1Peter 3:21

Just as the flood purified the earth, so also baptism purifies the soul. Baptism is the cleansing of a person from impurity and idolatry.

Peter said baptism is an “antitype” of the flood. The Greek word he used here is ἀντίτυπον (antitypon) which means typical of, representing by type or pattern, corresponding to, a thing resembling another, or its counterpart. It refers to another thing that is similar to the first.

Therefore, baptism is a type or pattern of the flood which saved Noah and his family. The flood cleansed the world of evil, and allowed Noah and his family to start over fresh. The whole earth was baptized in water, which is symbolic of resurrection, because new life came forth from the ark.

Peter also says we are baptized “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” Therefore, our baptism is connected to the resurrection of Yeshua. Likewise, Paul made a similar analogy between baptism and the resurrection of Yeshua.

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him”
Romans 6:1-8

According to Paul, baptism is an identification with the death and resurrection of our Messiah. As we go down into the waters we are receiving His death and burial, and as we come up out of the waters we are proclaiming His resurrection and new life. In this way, baptism becomes an expression of faith in the resurrection of the dead.

Peter compelled the people to be baptized during his sermon, teaching baptism for the remission of sins.

“Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit… Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.”
Acts 2:37-41

It is no wonder that we see the Apostles placing such emphasis on baptism among new believers. Here are a few examples from the book of Acts that show how important it was to the First Century believers.

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.”
Acts 8:12

“Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.”
Acts 8:35-38

Even Paul was compelled to be baptized when he became a believer.

“And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.”
Acts 9:17-18

“…he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him. Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth. For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'”
Acts 22:13-16

Notice that baptism was done immediately after coming to faith. They didn’t have an “altar call” or take a new members class, they believed and were baptized. There was a sense of urgency connected to each of these baptism accounts, because they understood baptism to be a vital part of their salvation.

Baptism marks the death our sinful ways, giving us a newness of life through the Spirit, because,

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
John 3:5

If we want to enter the Kingdom and have eternal life, then we must put our sinful flesh to death, and live our life according to the Spirit, walking in obedience to the Word of God.

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 2:38

In many churches it is popular to have an “altar call” for people who want to convert and be saved, but the Bible places emphasis on baptism for conversion, salvation, and for the remission of sins. The Bible never mentions an “altar call”, Peter didn’t ask people to “raise their hands and pray a prayer”, the apostles always compelled the new believers to immediately get baptized.

I have one final verse for those who don’t think baptism is important.

“the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.”
Luke 7:30

  1. It’s more than likely that what JTB was doing was holding people underwater long enough to simulate a near-death experience.

    It’s been reported that near-death experiences from drowning can induce a spiritually-driven experience. Makes more sense than just sprinkling water or dunking your head below the water for a few seconds.

    • Actually, according to traditional Hebrew immersion, John would not have even touched the person being baptized. He would simply stand watch as a witness to make sure they completely submerge themselves under the water. He did not dunk anyone, and he certainly did not hold them underwater until they almost died.

    Thanks for your thoughts on Baptism. Baptism has been a topic of mine for quite some time. Other topics of mine [I am saying in advance] are basically these:
    1. The true identity of God and Jesus [Theology 101] is corrupted in the world and is still corrupted within the Hebrew Roots Movements.
    2. Baptism – Gods final Word to mankind.
    3. Scripture tampering in our Cannon to confuse the true identity of God and his Son.

    Let’s begin… Interestingly the first scripture you quote; and one that the Hebrew Roots movement is continually/unknowingly quoting is Mathew 28: 19-20. This passage I will point out is a gloss and fortunately there is enough scripture to irrevocably refute this passage as scripture. Judge for yourself whether what I say is true or not – and test everything! When we look in the book of Acts we see that all converts were baptized solely in the name of Jesus Christ, NOT the triune formula conveyed in Matt 28:19-20. So either the Apostles were already apostate on Pentecost day, just weeks after Jesus spoke these reputed words, or the passage has been tampered with. FYI: The corresponding verse in Mark does not contain the Trinity formula either:
    He said to them, “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:15-16

    So, I would like to emphasize “Believes What?” at this point. You are very correct to point out the importance of baptism. In this passage we clearly see that the true faith which brings salvation is somehow tied in with salvation, is it not? Also, that the gospel message is to include baptism.

    Many believe that the Gospel message has something to do with believing in Jesus… accepting Jesus into your heart etc… However, the above verse and also the following indicate that the gospel message might be more exacted to some thing like, “Repent and be Baptized”. Again, hear Jesus:

    45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “This is what is written: the Messiah must suffer and must rise from death three days later, 47 and in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.

    And corresponding to this “beginning in Jerusalem” I would also quote Micha 4:1-2
    In days to come
    the mountain where the Temple stands
    will be the highest one of all,
    towering above all the hills.
    Many nations will come streaming to it,
    2 and their people will say,
    “Let us go up the hill of the LORD,[a]
    to the Temple of Israel’s God.
    He will teach us what he wants us to do;
    we will walk in the paths he has chosen.
    For the LORD’s teaching comes from Jerusalem;
    from Zion he speaks to his people.”

    The point to take here is that when Peter speaks on Pentecost day, that it is God’s spirit (God), now preaching the completion of His project which is the gospel of the kingdom. If this is what saves us [obedience to God] then Jesus centricism is an error [and it is]. Jesus was SENT by God for God’s purposes which was for Jesus to shed his atoning blood on the cross. We are connected to that blood ONLY when we “hear the word of God and act accordingly – Jesus. No one with sin will find there way into yes – Heaven and then to resurrection. For just as the grave had no claim on Jesus it will have no claim on those who’s sin has been remitted (Acts 2:38). Neither will anyone with sin still on them be able to enter into the kingdom or Heaven (yes Heaven). Jesus did not come to perform his own purpose. He came to point us to his God (Jesus was a Jew to the core and the Jews are monotheists, Jesus’ God was his father. Deut 6:4). The Bible nowhere indicates that Jesus is God and clearly the apostles never considered him to be God. Read the beginning of any “Paul” epistle [and most others] to see for yourself whether the apostles differentiate between Jesus and God.

    To conclude, the Hebrew Roots movement is yet critically deceived about the identity of God and Jesus. This message (Jesus is not God, Jesus does not save but rather God does) is necessary to understand how Baptism fits within monotheistic Judaism and God’s salvation.

    i have always had trouble understanding the importance of baptism but my challenge is,
    being raised from a catholic background i was baptized without my consent “i mean when i was about a few days on the earth’ now that i have understood do i need to be baptized again or i should not call it baptism oh my GOD Catholics deceived so much.

    • I suggest that you get baptized by choice since your first baptism was done without your consent.
